Painting over wall panelling/Cleaning cement before relaying carpet

Question from: Irene
Spruce Grove, AB

Dear Shell,

A while back on your radio program you mentioned how to paint over wall paneling. This is an old house and all the paneling is probably a veneer and the color is dark. I would like to know the steps that you recommend to paint over the paneling and achieve an interesting texture to the room. Also, in our house we are ripping out the carpet and underlay in a guest bedroom where the floor is concrete. This room has a very strong cat urine smell. I would like to clean the cement and seal it before we relay the underlay and carpet. I would very much appreciate your suggestions for eliminating this odour. Thanks Shell for all of your good advice and we enjoy your program and your friendly manner.

Thanks, Irene

Dear Irene,

Regarding painting your paneling these are the steps to follow: Wash the walls with the Shell Busey Home Cleaning formula & Rinse well Using a pure bristle brush apply a coat of fast dry alkyd primer to the grooves and then use a roller to apply it to the flat surfaces Tint the primer to the same shade as your finish coat allow to dry for 3-4 hours. Apply finish coat of acrylic latex using a polyester paintbrush and paint roller. Regarding the urine odour: Remove all the carpet and underlay Acid wash the floor using a 2/3 water and 1/3 muriatic acid mixture, rinse well then wash with the Shell Busey Home Cleaning formula, again rinse well and allow to dry. Now you should seal the concrete using a solvent based concrete sealer (like Aqua Seal) available at Cloverdale Paint & Windsor Plywood Stores, then once dry you can install your new underpad and carpet.

NOTE:
It’s just that easy Odor Remover is also available now at Windsor Plywood Stores, which eliminates odors and can be used on everything except Silk & Satin fabrics.

Coleman Safety Notice Mobile Home Gas Furnace

Re: Safety Notice Mobile Home Gas Furnace Inspection and Upgrade Program

The Unitary products Group (UPG) of York International has announced a voluntary inspection and upgrade of select model manufactured housing gas furnaces. Our records indicate you may have one of the select models involved as listed below:

DGAM075BDD DGAT070BDD DGAT075BDD DLAS075BDD
DGAM075BDE DGAT070BDE DGAT075BDE DLAS075BDE
DGAM075BDF DGAT070BDF DGAT075BDF DLAS075BDF

These furnaces were manufactured between 1995 thru 2000 and sold under the brand names of Coleman, Coleman Evcon and Red T. We believe your manufactured home may have one of these furnaces.

A number of premature heat exchanger failures on these furnaces have been reported. The furnaces involved in these reports were found to have heat exchanger cracking, burn through and in extreme cases, furnace wrapper burn through.

These situations, if left unresolved, can lead to significant property damage, personal injury or death.

The cause of these failures typically has been found to be attributed to application of the furnace beyond normal rated specifications combined with component part variation
